Dementia affects thousands of Utah families every year. When the diagnosis comes, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Can a small assisted living home like yours provide the care my loved one needs?”
Here’s a straightforward answer based on how our 15-resident Type I home actually works.
What We Can and Cannot Do
We can support residents with:
- Mild to moderate cognitive impairment
- Early-stage dementia
- Memory loss that still allows them to remain safe in a small, supervised home environment
We cannot provide:
- Full secured memory care for advanced dementia or wandering risk
- The higher staffing levels and locked-unit environment that Type II or dedicated memory care facilities offer
Because we are a Type I assisted living home, Utah state rules require that our residents must be able to exit the building without physical assistance in an emergency. This is an important safety standard we follow.
How We Support Residents with Mild to Moderate Dementia
In our small home we are often able to give residents with early dementia excellent care because:
- With only 15 residents, staff can provide more one-on-one attention.
- Our consistent team creates familiarity and reduces confusion.
- We use gentle routines, visual cues, and a calm environment to help residents feel safe and comfortable.
- We work closely with families and physicians to create individualized care plans.
Many families tell us their loved one actually seems happier and more engaged in our small home than they did living alone or in a much larger facility.
When a Larger or Type II Facility Might Be Better
If your loved one has advanced dementia, wanders, or needs constant supervision, a dedicated memory care unit or Type II facility is usually the safer choice.
We are always honest with families about what we can and cannot provide. Our goal is to make sure your loved one is in the right place — even if that means referring you to another community.
Not sure what level of care is right for your loved one?
We’re happy to talk with you openly and help you figure out the best next step. Many families find that even with mild cognitive changes, our small home is a wonderful fit.
